Library FAQ's
What grade levels get to check out books from the library?
Grades K-5 check out library books. Students in K may check out one book at a time. Grades 1 and 2 may check out two books at a time. Grades 3 and up may check out three books at a time. Students may check out additional books with permission if they are doing a report, working on a project, etc. Students in the 4 year old program are able to choose a book from the library but it is checked out on the teacher's card and kept in the classroom.
How long may students keep a library book?
The normal check out period is two weeks. Students who need additional time with a book may renew it for an additional two weeks.
How are overdue books handled?
Each month I will send out overdue slips to students who have books that are at least one week overdue. Students should either return the book or let me know that they need to renew it. I do not charge fines for overdue books.
What if a book is lost or damaged?
Students must pay the replacement cost for the book if it is not found before the end of the school year. Students who have an excessive number of lost books may have their check-out privileges restricted until they either return or pay for the books.
What else may students check out besides books?
Students may check out magazines in addition to books. We currently subscribe to National Geographic Kids, Kids Discover, and Ranger Rick.
When are students allowed to go to the library for check out?
Students are free to come to the library throughout the day with their teacher's permission. Some teachers also choose to schedule group check out times for their students.
Why else might students come to the library?
Kindergarten and 1st grade students come every other week for story time and a related activity.Students in grades 2-5 come to the library for lessons and activities on a variety of skills ranging from doing research and using reference books to recognizing parts of a story and identifying figurative language. Students also come to the library to work on a variety of research projects with their classes.
