CMS Rules for Survival

Vision Statement

The Centennial Middle School team is dedicated to ensuring that our students have the tools necessary to achieve their full potential, become capable and responsible citizens and life-long learners.

Classroom Disciplinary Steps

  1. warning; teacher documentation on referral form
  2. 2nd warning; added documentation on referral form; parent phone call
  3. parent notification; added teacher documentation; teacher assigned detention
  4. added teacher documentation; administrative referral

Absence/Tardy

  • The school day begins at 8 a.m. If you arrive before 8:00, you may eat breakfast in the cafeteria, visit the library or a teacher with a pass, or wait in the gym until dismissed.
  • All students must check in or out through the attendance office. Parents are required to come in to the attendance office in order to check their child in or out of school.
  • Students must receive a pass from the attendance office to be admitted to class if they arrive after 8 a.m. If students are later than 10 minutes to 1st hour, it is counted as an absence. Detention will be assigned with tardy #3.
  • Parents are asked to call Centennial before 8 a.m. if their child will be absent. A staff member will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. to take those calls. The attendance staff is responsible to call parents when an absence is unreported.
  • Students are expected to be in class on time according to the posted hourly schedule.

School Conduct

  • No food or drink is allowed in class; candy will be given at the teacher’s discretion. Please be responsible with candy, chewing gum, mints, or cough drops, and dispose of them properly
  • PDA in all forms is prohibited
  • Threatening behavior including verbal, physical, or cyber bullying will not be tolerated and will be dealt with appropriately.
  • The use of vulgar, profane, or abusive language in school and/or at school activities is prohibited, and will be dealt with as a serious disciplinary offense.
  • Students are not allowed to possess any type of medication on school property. All medicine must be checked in with the school nurse. See handbook pages 45-48 for complete medication procedures.

Dress Code

  • Violation of the school dress code will result in detention and/or suspension. Please read the dress code policy on page 33-35 of the student handbook.
  • Any facial/body piercing, makeup, or accessories (including hats, headbands, armbands, gang symbols, monograms, chains, dog collars, etc) that are disruptive to the educational process will not be allowed.
  • Skirts or dresses must extend two (2) inches beyond the longest finger on the hand
    with the shoulders in a relaxed position.
  • Any article of clothing which exposes the back or midriff may not be worn.  
  • Shirt, dress, and sleeve openings must not expose the torso, chest, or undergarments.
  • Shorts must extend to the tip of the longest finger on the hand with the shoulders in a relaxed position.
  • Sagging is not acceptable; pants may not ride low exposing the torso or back or undergarments.
  • Pajama style pants or slippers are not appropriate for school wear.

Electronic Equipment

According to Board policy, electronic devices are not allowed to be used at any time for any reason inside the school building or on school property during school hours (8:00 a.m. – 2:40 p.m.) unless authorized by the principal. They must be turned off and put away during the instructional day. Any camera/video capabilities available on cell phone are strictly prohibited on school grounds.

In the event of misuse, a school official may confiscate the wireless device and return the device to a parent or other adult parental representative.
Offenses will result in:

  • 1st offense – device confiscated; parent contacted for pick-up; documentation
  • 2nd offense – device confiscated; parent contacted for pick-up; 2 detentions; documentation
  • 3rd offense - device confiscated; parent contacted for pick-up; 4 detentions; documentation
  • 4th offense and following- appropriate suspension step

The rules identified above are the most commonly misunderstood. However, it is very important that students and parents read and understand the middle school handbook.

Our governing principle is that students are here to learn each day. We want to provide an environment conducive to that objective for every student.
