Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)

First Step: Establish and maintain norms:  A high-functioning PLC will continuously observe a set of behaviors that establish an environment of respect.  Norms should be revisited at the beginning of each PLC meeting to maintain fidelity.

Second Step: The team will focus on addressing the Four PLC Questions when appropriate.

1) What is it we want students to learn?  Goals are determined before or just as a unit begins

  • The Big Picture

  • What is the goal for this unit?

    • What is the expected time frame?

    • Refer to objectives in the sequence of instruction

      • What are the expectations for learning?

  • What do we want students to be able to show us when the unit is complete?

  • How do we approach the content to support the objectives? (How does the unit flow?)

  • What are natural breaking points in the unit for a quick check? (CFA)

    • At what point during the timeline will you implement the CFA?

  • Narrow The Scope:

    • How are we going to get the students to reach the big picture goal?

    • What Essential Skill (High School & Middle School) will we address within this unit?

    • What specific objectives will be addressed?

2) How will we know when the students have learned the content? CFAs are created based upon determined learning targets that include essential skills

  • Create CFA:
    • No more than 10 questions (Input from all)

    • Determine how to appropriately assess the Essential Skill

      • Establish common grading practices (this is a MUST for team analysis)

  • Analyze CFA data:

    • Were the questions a true measure of student learning?

    • Which instructional strategies worked well based upon the collected data?

    • What are areas of concern? (Which skills need attention)

3) How will we respond when students don't meet learning targets? Best practices are discussed  and effective strategies are chosen for implementation in the classroom (Tier 1 remediation)

4) How will we respond when students have met the learning targets? Best practices are discussed  and effective strategies are chosen for implementation in the classroom (Tier 1 enrichment)
