Construction projects from 2015 bond in full swing this summer

Due to the 2015 bond issue, Broken Arrow Public Schools is seeing a number of projects take place this summer, including construction at Sequoyah Middle School, Timber Ridge Elementary, Broken Arrow High School, the Freshman Academy and the Kirkland Activity Complex. In addition, the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center is receiving upgrades and is the last remaining construction project of the 2009 bond issue.

Sequoyah Middle School

Sequoyah Middle School has been under construction since May 2016. This project is in phase four of the four-phased construction schedule. Construction will be completed for the 2017-18 school year. In March 2017, Sequoyah received a new cafeteria, kitchen and fine arts wing, which included a band room, orchestra room, black box drama room and a choir room. The fine arts space also doubles as a FEMA Safe Room, which means they were designed to FEMA P-361 “Safe Room” standards. The school also received two courtyards, one with riser seating and raised planter beds where students can learn about health and nutrition and one with basketball goals and other outdoor activity spaces. All existing classrooms will receive new carpet, furniture and built-in cabinets.

Timber Ridge Elementary School

Timber Ridge is the district’s 15th elementary school and is progressing at a rapid pace. Broken Arrow students and staff will take occupancy of this building for the 2017-18 school year. This school contains 34 classrooms, a media center, art room, music room, cafeteria and gymnasium. The gymnasium will also be a FEMA Safe Room. The school is located at 209 E. Ave., just north of Kenosha.

Broken Arrow High School

The high school is receiving 11 new classrooms, additional serving/eating spaces and a completely repaired south parking lot. In addition, Classroom Building B will be connected to the gymnasium, which means that students won’t have to walk outside in order to get from the gymnasium to Building B. This project started in November 2016 and will continue until November 2017.

Freshman Academy

The Freshman Academy project began in May and will include a large addition to the front of the building and interior renovations of existing rooms. The addition will consist of a new media center and science labs. The existing media center will be renovated into classrooms. Construction is expected to conclude in August 2018.

Kirkland Activities Complex

The site formerly referred to as North Intermediate High School is being renovated into the Kirkland Activities Complex. Demolition of some of the existing buildings has been completed and renovations to the remaining buildings has started. This site will be repurposed into two turf soccer fields. The soccer fields and remodels to the auditorium and gymnasium will be completed late fall 2017. In phase four of the bond, a swimming facility will be added.

Performing Arts Center (PAC)/Education Service Center (ESC)

The additions and renovations at the PAC are the last project on the 2009 bond issue. Once the remodel is complete, the district’s human resources and payroll departments will have a reception area, applicant room, conference room, a file/work room and offices to accommodate staff. In addition, the PAC will be receiving an updated box office as well as additional practice spaces and dressing rooms. Renovations include remodeling the human resources and payroll offices, the PAC box office, the receptionist’s area, seating area, and an addition to the west side of the building for the PAC. This project is expected to be complete before spring break 2018, with a majority of the remodel completed this September.
