High school courses requiring completed applications

The following high school elective courses require students to submit an application in order to be accepted into the class.

Applied Leadership - Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

This class is designed for student aspiring leaders and students who are interested in improving and applying leadership skills and engagement in school activities. Goal setting, team building, and leadership theory are studied and put into practice through involvement in school activities and community projects. Advanced Creative Writing - Grades: 11, 12

Students will hone the writing skills developed in Creative Writing. Students will seriously evaluate published writing examples, which will include a style analysis essay. Students will engage in writing workshops that will prepare them for public readings and publication. Students will develop a strong consistent writing work ethic by developing a semester-long project/portfolio in the genre of their choosing. Students must submit an online application for this class.

Advanced Food Innovations - Grades: 11, 12

This course focuses on the relationship of chemistry and its effect on food. Emphasis is on lab activities that focus on chemistry principles and scientific methods. Topics include safety in the laboratory, basic principles of chemistry, properties of water, acids and bases, enzymes and food preparations, additives and preservation, handling and 30 storing of food, baking principles in relation to the food groups, and the exploration of food science careers. Leadership opportunities are offered through the student organization, Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) where students are highly encouraged to join and participate. Students must submit an online application for this class.

Advanced Leadership - Grades: 10, 11, 12

This class is designed for student leaders, officers, or appointed chairpersons who will focus on training, improvement and application of leadership skills and activities. Goal setting, organizational theory and leadership theory are studied and put into practice through involvement in school and community projects. Organizational officers are encouraged to enroll. ArrowVision Digital Media - Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

The ArrowVision digital media department prepares students for a career in digital media production, journalism, sports media, modern filmmaking and more. We want to develop a community of passionate artists and create a culture of creativity. Using a combination of real-world and classroom experience, students will become storytellers and build a strong portfolio through the ArrowVision courses in their time at Broken Arrow High School. 

ArrowVision students should take Intro to ArrowVision as freshmen, Digital Storytelling as sophomores, Creative Media Production 1 as juniors and Creative Media Production 2 as seniors. Students may take multiple ArrowVision courses in a calendar year if their schedule allows for it.

Athletic Trainer - Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

The Athletic Training Program consists of a group of students who are assigned to specific sports teams and provide first aid to BAPS athletes. Students will learn sports medicine, observe professional athletic trainers at work and help injured athletes with medicine and rehab. Below are some athletic trainer aide assignments within this program:

  • Help with everyday practices & games for BA sports
  • Travel with BA sports teams during games
  • Learn basic first aid & CPR/AED
  • Learn basic taping techniques
  • Assist in rehab for athletes
  • Assist in treatments for athletes
  • Get to observe certified athletic trainers on injuries for learning purposes

Career Exploration Internship (CEP) - Grade: 12

Students have the opportunity to intern at a business to help analyze career choices. Students will be required to attend an evening orientation with their parents. Students will report daily to their placement with the exception of a pre-determined one day a month (calendar will be given to students and parents at orientation) at BAHS with the CEP coordinator for class. A weekly journal addressing specific questions and prompts provided by the CEP coordinator will be required. Prompts/questions will be sent weekly via student email accounts. This is not a core credit, student must maintain employment.

Students must submit an application for this course and submit the application to the College and Career Center.

Career Pathway Internship - Grade 11, 12

The Career Pathway Internship provides students a form of experimental learning and skills development in a professional setting with established BAPS business partners. Internships provide students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths, as well as give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent. Students must submit an application for this course and submit the application to the College and Career Center.

Chromebook Desk - Grades: 10, 11, 12

Students will use critical thinking, troubleshooting, and customer service skills to assess problems and repair chrome devices. They will be defining the best approach to addressing or solving a problem. In addition to solving problems for their classmates and teachers, students will be required to complete several projects that address problems or solutions in educational technology integration. Students will need to submit an application and also be interviewed for this course.

Concurrent Enrollment - Grades: 11, 12

Concurrent college courses count as high school and college credits. Students must meet the minimum SAT/ACT scores to take Concurrent College Courses. Courses offered through Tulsa Community College and classes are located at NSU-BA & BAHS. View more information on how to apply to participate in the concurrent classes.

Employment Skills Internship - Grades: 11, 12

This internship course offers students the opportunity to explore a job site and be paid by an employer. Students can earn high school credit for employment by participating in paid educational activities that correspond to their employer’s objectives. Up to two (2) credit hours may be earned per semester to be determined by number of hours worked. Students will need to submit an application for this course.

Foundations of Manufacturing - Grades: 10, 11, 12

After completing the Introduction to Manufacturing course, students further investigate processes of manufacturing. This course covers topics of automated design and machining, review blueprint basics, symbols related to electrical circuits, hydraulics, pneumatics, welding and fundamentals of robotics. Students learn the concepts of creating products. Workplace safety, communication and problem solving skills are incorporated. Students completing this course will be prepared to enter an advanced manufacturing career major at Tulsa Technology Center. Students must get an application for this course through TTC.

Intro to Engineering Design - Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

Utilizes "Project Lead The Way” curriculum. Students will dig deep into engineering design process by applying math and science and design solutions using 3D modeling software. Students must get an application for this course through Tulsa Technology Center.

Office Internship

This course is an introduction to office procedures and concepts which focus on skills necessary for office workers at every level. Skills addressed include effective communication, telephone and business office etiquette, public relations, filing and copying procedures. Students will be assigned to a school office or computer lab and will perform a variety of tasks including running errands. Written course work is required including a final exam. Students must submit an online application for this class.

Online Courses - Blended Enrollment

In addition to traditional courses, Broken Arrow High School also offers selected online courses for grades 10-12 through Broken Arrow Virtual School. Applications for the online courses will not be taken until April 2020.

Teach Oklahoma - Grades: 11, 12

Teach Oklahoma is an exemplary project that targets high school students who possess high academic and leadership standards to consider the teaching profession as a viable career choice. The Teach Oklahoma curriculum is a hands-on practice that explores the various areas of teaching, observation, and professional portfolio development, while engaging students in fascinating clinical teaching exercises within an actual educational setting. These activities expose Teach Oklahoma students to the following: the child development process, diversity issues, lesson planning, and the variety of various learning styles, differentiated instruction strategies, and oral presentation skills. Download application.
